HĀ KINA, HĀ PUTA

Breathe in, breathe out.

When I began thinking about this collection, I kept coming back to Mauri Tau and the feeling of being grounded and present. Hā kina, hā puta became a way of expressing that feeling through the work. This is the most proud I have felt of a collection, and the most like myself. There is a sense of calm in that for me, of trusting my hands, the materials and the process.

Fresh from the New Zealand Fashion Week runway, the collection follows wool through its many forms, from fleece and carded fibre to homespun yarn, felt, woven cloth and finished garments. Texture, irregularity and the marks of the hand are celebrated rather than hidden.

At the heart of the work is my ongoing relationship with the wāhine of the Te Māhia craft group. Their knowledge, skill and generosity continue to shape my practice. Fleece is sourced, carded and spun before returning to my hands to be dyed, knitted, woven and felted. Each piece carries the hands, time and knowledge held within that process.

Hā Kina, Hā Puta feels like a moment of settling into my practice, and being present with what is already here.
